The Story of Hungary’s Iconic Paprika Pastes: Piros Arany and Erős Pista
Hungarian cuisine is world-famous for its bold flavors and rich use of paprika. Today, we bring you the fascinating story of two legendary Hungarian paprika pastes that have become true symbols of the country’s culinary heritage: Piros Arany (Red Gold) and Erős Pista (Strong Steve).
The beginning of a legend in Hetényegyháza
In 1965, the Univer company opened a new canning factory in Hetényegyháza near Kecskemét. The initial goal was simple: to provide local women with job opportunities and supply nearby shops with fresh preserves. But no one expected that this small village would become home to products that would conquer not only Hungary but international markets as well.
A special research team, consisting only of men, developed new recipes while consulting with the women working in the factory during the testing phases. Key innovators such as Bódogh József, Bontovics Lajos, Horváth György, and Szabó Imre received the prestigious "Outstanding Innovator" award for their success.

The secret recipe of five paprika varieties
The first paprika paste was made using a blend of five different paprika varieties. The team drew inspiration from hundreds of cookbooks gathered from all over the world. Naming the product was easy — in Hungary’s paprika-growing regions, paprika had long been called "red gold."
The paprika was dried, sanitized, and processed using a cold method, preserving its fresh and intense flavor. Interestingly, the very first product to be sold in tubes was not the paprika paste, but horseradish in vinegar.
Piros Arany conquers Hungary
In 1968, Piros Arany made its market debut. The first 500,000 tubes sold out in just two months! By 1973, sales had already reached over 6 million units. At that time, decorating sandwiches with paprika paste became a culinary trend, but Piros Arany quickly found its place in classic dishes like goulash, pörkölt, lecso, and many other Hungarian favorites.

Continuous innovation and expanding production
The innovators didn’t stop at paprika pastes. In the following years, they developed other products such as horseradish paste, celery paste, onion paste, goulash paste, as well as mayonnaise and mustard in multiple flavors. Production operated on a Swiss machine purchased for 2.5 million forints, but new challenges arose: there was a shortage of tubes. At the time, only Mátravidéki Fémművek in Hungary produced metal tubes, and they were in high demand by the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.
Perhaps for this reason, it was decided that Erős Pista would be introduced in glass jars. This coarsely ground, seed-filled hot paprika paste quickly became a staple on Hungarian dining tables, always served alongside goulash, fish soup (halászlé), and stews.

In 2016, both products were officially included on the list of Hungarikums — representing Hungary’s most valuable national treasures. They make for perfect authentic souvenirs and are a must-have for anyone who loves bold, spicy flavors.
